Use Colors in Your Bedroom That Tend to Induce Relaxation

The colors of the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The electromagnetic spectrum itself is made up of electromagnetic spectrum itself is made up of electromagnetic waves including X-rays, infrared, and ultraviolet. These are invisible to the naked eye.

The waves that induce the sensation of red are 700 nanometers in length. (Nanometers are one billionth of the meter.) The waves that induce the sensation of violet are 400 nanometers in length. Red waves are said to be long. And violet waves are said to be short. Research on the psychological effect of color suggests that waves from the long end of the visible spectrum red, orange, and yellow tend to excite the nervous system. They increase arousal by clicking on the sympathetic division of your autonomic nervous system.

On the other hand, waves fro short end of the visible spectrum green, blue, indigo, and violet tend to calm the nervous system. They decrease arousal by clicking on the parasympathetic division of your autonomic nervous system. You want your bedroom to have a tranquilizing effect. Consequently, it makes sense decorate the bedroom in colors that induce relaxation. Although you may only spend short time in the bedroom with the light on before you go sleep. You don’t want to be hit with a blast of stimulating color just before you settle down.

Whenever you go in and out of your bedroom, you don’t want its colors to increase alertness. If they do, then increased alertness will become a conditioned response associated with the bedroom. When you step into your bedroom just before retiring, you will automatically tend to awaken instead of getting drowsy. This is clearly undesirable and antagonistic to the sleep you seek.
