Be Sure That You Are Sleeping On The Right Mattress
A great deal of misinformation surrounds the whole subject of mattresses. People who suffer from insomnia are easy prey for salespersons who make all sorts of extravagant claims about the way in which a particular mattress keep the spine straight or allow for a minimum of pressure on the joint, and so forth. And the price you pay for mattress is not a reliable criterion. Sometime people pay as much as two times more than they need to for a mattress that will serve them no better than a less expensive one.
Usually you are told that the mattress should be firm, that this gives you better support. It is certainly true if you use an old broken down mattress with feeble springs, it will be hard on your back. But, should you buy a mattress that is marked firmif you only weight 110 ponds? Under such circumstance, you might feel as if you are sleeping on a slab of granite. If you don’t weight much, a mattress that is marked mediummight be better. On the other hand, if you are obese, a mattress that is marked extra firm will probably be better for you.
Note that I have used the word marked above, not rated. A manufacturer’s making are not certified ratings. Be sure you follow the old principle of caveat emptor, or buyer beware, you have to recline on a mattress in a number positions, including on your side, in order to make your own personal rating of soft, medium, firm, or extrafirm, you can only do this if you have shopped around and tired out more than one mattress.
Sometimes when a couple sleeps on the same mattress there can be a problem if they are different weights. One or both persons may feel a mattress is too soft and his wife might be convinced that the same mattress is too hard. In a case like this it is probably a good idea to obtain separate mattress for each individual.
What about putting a board under your bed? This advice is often given to people who have back complaints. I counted that a board is generally too rigid and unyielding. Using a board is based on the idea that one’s mattress is too soft or broken down. It is probably a better idea to sleep on an extrafirm mattress than to put a board under an old, or a soft, mattress.
