Eating more often, but smaller amount at time, is a good idea for everyone, for a variety of sound health reasons, but it can be particularly helpful for people with acid reflux. Here’s why:
Smaller, lower fat meals don’t stay in the stomach as long as larger, higher fat meals. They move more quickly to the intestine. And the shorter the time food is waiting around in the stomach the shorter the time the stomach contents (including the stomach acid) are potentially splashing around, irritating the upper GI.
Large meals fill up the stomach and are more likely to put pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter to open, allowing the contents of the full stomach to splash up into the esophagus. Picture an empty 2 liter soda bottle with 2 cups of liquid in it, screw on the top, and agitate the liquid. It is fairly difficult to get the liquid to splash around and hit the bottle cap isn’t it? Now, fill that same 2 liter soda bottle with 6 cups of liquid. Suddenly hitting that bottle cap with some of the liquid is a lot easier now that the bottle is almost full.
